The other day I was chatting to a very good friend of mine in South Africa that has developed her consultancy by focusing on developing leadership skills with women clients. That led to a discussion on what leadership destructive traits, are common for both genders.
This article attempts to highlight the common areas between the genders, and what traits are typically encountered in both.
Because the economic downturn is forcing so many people into the unemployment arena, so many people are now looking at entrepreneurship as the solution for their current status.
It is now cool to be an entrepreneur! After all, entrepreneurs have boundless energy, the need to create, the capacity to work for long hours without sleep, and the ability to make things out of nothing.
There is no doubt, that these qualities can be powerful drivers of success, but this enthusiasm can also keep them from moving forward and cause them to strangle their business - after all - you can only do so much yourself before you hit the wall.
Leadership is being able to recognize when you need help, and being able to let go and empower others to help you. This is one of the most difficult decisions that many new and existing business owners have to make.
You, like many other entrepreneurs, are so capable and creative, and there are so many things you do well - so well, in fact, that you find it difficult to accept the way other people do things, especially the way they do things for you.
In order to have the control you need, you find it necessary and easier to do most things yourself. And besides, why would you pay someone to do something that you can do better yourself?
I guarantee you that none of those statements above are true - you just think they are. I also guarantee you that if you want your business to grow, you're going to have to give it up some of your own fears, and will need to loose control so that you can gain control of your business.
After all, there are only so many hours in the day. It's a blessing to be an entrepreneur. But it can turn into a real pain if your business is at a standstill because are being to controlling and are scared of letting go, and letting others assist you.
Think about using all of your energy in a more effective manner, rather than be seeing as being so busy as a "busy-nessperson", that forgets, that being an entrepreneur, being a business person, requires a healthy dose of leadership.
Leadership means that you let go of the fear that consumes you ... it means freedom.
